Looking southeast over London from the 34th floor of the BT Tower towards St Paul's cathedral, the City of London and Canary Wharf on a sunny afternoon.

Photographed one afternoon in summer 2011 during an open day event at the London landmark, affording fantastic views across the capital. Here we can see the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral surrounded by buildings of similar height, contrasted with far newer high-rise developments reaching for the sky in the City of London and beyond in Canary Wharf.

Looking SSE over London from the 34th floor of the BT Tower towards Centre Point and Central Saint Giles, the Royal Opera House and the OXO Tower. The residential and office space development Central Saint Giles, completed in 2010 and designed by architect Renzo Piano, adds a very welcome splash of colour to an otherwise drab urban landscape.

The top of Tower 42, the first skyscraper in the City of London, seen from a nearby office building. Standing 183m tall and completed in 1980, it was originally known as the NatWest Tower after its original owners, who designed the plan of the tower to resemble the bank’s logo.

Photographed through the window of an office on Lower Thames Street. I particularly liked how the skyscraper seemed to be peering over the roof cladding opposite. The rickety aerial to the left serves to remind the viewer that that is indeed a rooftop in the foreground.

Illuminated Santas keep watch over a construction site in Tsada, Cyprus. Things are looking up; the same two characters featured in the same spot last year, and this year they gained a Christmas tree.

For many years this construction site – an apartment block on the edge of the village – remained unchanged, just a concrete framework that you’d barely notice. But at Christmas time, when Cyprus suddenly comes alive with illuminated festive decorations, a couple of Santas would appear on the structure, welcoming visitors to the village. During the 2009/2010 festive period they stood alone – here they are, as they were then – but in 2010/2011 they gained a tree.

Whilst visiting in October 2011 I saw that construction has resumed, and there is now an apartment where these Santas stood. Where will they appear next Christmas..?

Silhouetted mountain ranges and dissipating storm clouds in eastern Spain, seen from the summit of Cumbre del Sol at sunset.

Photographed immediately after a dramatic early evening storm. Perfectly timed to coincide with sunset, the way these huge, wet clouds caught the golden light was simply magical. The storm was followed by very strong winds, strong enough to make it quite challenging to hold the camera steady. But the winds blew away the clouds, and the sun continued to set, with the result that this amazing scene was gone just moments later. Read the full story with more photographs in this article.

The pool at Casa Patricia in Cumbre del Sol, Spain.

Casa Patricia is a wonderful villa on Spain’s eastern coast, roughly equidistant between Valencia and Alicante. During my stay I took a few shots of the place, partly because I can’t stop photographing wherever I go and partly because the villa’s owner wanted some newer images for its website. Out of the many photographs I took, I’m constantly drawn to the simplicity of this one – it just makes me want to head back, and dive in.

More information on my stay at the villa and the nearby places I visited can be found in these articles. Further images can be seen in the Casa Patricia gallery, and the villa’s own website is here.

The Old Naval College, Greenwich, and the highrise offices of Canary Wharf, seen from Greenwich Park (Nick Anderson)

The Old Naval College, Greenwich, and the highrise offices of Canary Wharf, seen from Greenwich Park.

Photographed early one morning in summer, from the top of the hill by the Royal Observatory. Out of the many photographs I took that morning, I particularly like the contrasts in this one – from the newer and no doubt heavily populated high-rises of Canary Wharf dominating the background, to the older and more stately buildings centre frame and lastly to the solitary person walking through the park in the foreground. More information and photographs from this particular visit can be found in this article.

Sign promoting a 20 MPH speed limit on Waterloo Bridge in London, seen against a bright blue sky.

A fairly random shot whilst out with the camera early one morning. I can’t quite put my finger on what I love about this image, but its simplicity would be a start.

The Palace of Westminster, seen from across the river Thames on the South Bank.

Another shot taken early one morning in summer whilst wandering around central London. Often referred to as a portrait lens (a role it performs brilliantly), the 85mm II lens also captures amazing urban images, from small street objets up to landscapes. For a handheld photograph, the detail in this particular image is simply staggering, from the clock faces and the gothic spires of the Palace of Westminster down to the people and traffic on Westminster bridge. I also love how the fluffy, early-morning clouds give the picture a painting-like quality. To see more detail than this small preview allows, click the photo to go through to the image library, then click it again to enlarge. Note that even there, the 1,000 pixel wide image is still only a little over 1/6 the resolution of the original – this photo deserves to be printed large!
